Todd Erickson (b. 1959) is a Detroit sculptor born in Lansing.
Erickson received his undergraduate degree from Hope College and his Master's of Fine Arts at Cranbrook Academy of Art. He has been making and exhibiting his sculpture for over 40 years and has been an employee of the College for Creative Studies since 1983. During his tenure at CCS, Erickson has taught in the Sculpture Section of the Fine Arts Department, managed the college shops, held positions as Director of Academic Facilities, Assistant Dean, and Director of Exhibit Services.
His career has included guest teaching, consulting, commission work, and exhibiting. Erickson’s work is cast and fabricated in bronze, iron, aluminum, steel, stone, wood, and glass.
"I am a sculptor who is more akin to a plein air painter. I feel most spiritually connected with my work at the sites of my material source-woods, meadows, swamps, and shorelines. Although I originate the initial ideas, by working intimately and intuitively outdoors, I am forced to allow reality to write the rest of the story in the mold rooms and foundry in Detroit. Because of my dedication and respect for materials and natural history, my forms are both unique and controlled while at the same time being a synthesis of beautiful natural form. These sculptures address and answer questions, while I remain seemingly human, completely out of control."
