Paradise Ascension, 2009. Bronze sculpture by Todd A. Erickson This sculpture was developed from collection of symbols representing the history and spirit of the area known as Paradise Valley- in downtown Detroit. Trees symbolize growth and change. As trees flourish and replace fields and pastures a forest ecosystem develops. Trees grow by branching. The symbol is generations branching out in a community and prosperous businesses branching out across the area. Long before Paradise Valley began and prospered, the Underground Railroad brought many southerners to this area. The role that our area churches played in bringing many thousand people to freedom is honored. There is a cross prominent in the center the sculpture and the fish or IXTHUS symbol that defines the sculptures shape. The Christian symbol of the fish from Roman times is borrowed in part due to similarities in the strife of early Christians and our Underground Railroad. There is a primitive ladder combined into the structure of the piece which is symbol of personal and community success, earned one rung at a time. Part of the uniqueness of the area was its economic strength, which allowed so many people access to an improved life. The work is cast in bronze but was created in White Pine – the state tree of Michigan. It was selected for symbolic value and its beauty in branching and grain.
